SOMETHING TO PONDER (8/18/22)

“In a recent sermon, Ed Young shared his definition that started from a google search of the term ‘woke’ as paganism, prideful, and a cult. Apparently, Young ignored the fact that definitions cannot be manipulated to accommodate pre-determined personal whims, without being intellectually insulting. His view is such a huge stretch from Merriam-Webster’s google definition of the term to mean, “aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice)”. After reading the article at churchleaders.com, it’s sad to me to see Young devolved into this sad myopic conclusion. This actually shows how little he understands the concept and worse, how it resulted in Ed Young using the pulpit to misinform.”

So, the reaction of our elected officials to the raid of Mar-A-Lago is revenge? House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif) threatens “When Republicans take back the House, we will conduct immediate oversight of this department, follow the facts, and leave no stone unturned,” for a legally conducted search, authorized by a federal judge. It is publicly known that the former President criminally removed highly confidential documents when he left office, after losing the election. However, agree or disagree with the actions of the FBI, it seems to me that to vow to take retaliatory action of causing injury, hard or pain to someone, is not a characteristic of a civilized society.

It is already clear that the former President responds forcefully against anyone that disagrees with him. He has suggested the firing thousands of federal employees that he views as enemies, once he is elected. But to see others fall in line with that immature strategy is mindful of autocratic dictatorships. Sadly, it is becoming clearer that there are individuals that are above the law and exempt from accountability, and I don’t mean just the former President. I fully believe our system of government should investigate both Republican and Democratic, elected and non-elected, individuals. If criminality is found, then let our system of justice do its work. And if there is nothing there, then leave it all alone and let’s move on. But revenge will never make America better. Revenge is an evil human impulse that left unchecked, will result in putrid darkness. Something to ponder!

Theological preaching focuses on forcefully challenging public policy juxtaposed to the gospel narrative (and stops there) without telling the congregants how to vote. The moment a pulpit names a candidate or mentions a political party, Christ has been ushered to the second seat. Give to Caesar by encouraging congregants to vote; give to God by preaching nothing but the Gospel.” Something to ponder!
